(Why I write about) Ginko Leaves

Surface: As seen by a spider’s eye.—
Into the distance in rows
of ridges: woven-perfect, perfect lines.

Form: Of origins, mysteries.—
Did the fan derive or define?
Gills, plates, palms, palms seen in gene-mirrors.

Grace: Movement contranym: cleaves.—
Breeze: light plays on sequins. Stillness:
snake scales…Such excess its leaves!

Singularity: Defies metonymy. Yet—

Meta-
morphosis: Drips old words.—
Its seasons chrysoprase, chartreuse—even gold:
Names some thing else; just off, just now: Weird.

Chron-
ology: Living memory, last of your kind.—
Of crow-sized dragonflies, lizard feathers, floods:
seer and sign on my intaglioed mind.
